Solar thermal systems is the combination of solar panels mounted on the roof of a building and a special boilers which exploit sunlight to heat the building while attaining significant economy of oil / gas / electricity depending on the type of the heating system. Read more.
BENEFITS OF SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS
- Economy in oil / gas / electricity up to 40%
- Improving the living conditions of the residents of the building
- Protecting the environment through reducing CO2 emissions
- Energy upgrading of the building under the new buildings’ energy law (KENAK)
COST – PAY-OFF
The cost of the basic equipment of a solar thermal system that includes collectors, boiler, pumps, and automation, depending on the area of the residence is:
- For a house of 60 m2: 6.000 €
- For a house of 120 m2: 10.000 €
- For a house of 180 m2: 15.000 €
- For a house of 240 m2: 20.000 €
The above prices do not include the installation work (installation, pipe work) which depends on the details of the dwelling and the existing heating system.
The pay-off of a solar heating system is highly dependent on the price of heating oil. With current oil prices, the pay-off is attained in 7-8 years, but considering the expected increases in the price of heating oil, pay-off is estimated at 4-6 years.

Solar thermal systems, can use solar energy for the heating needs of our homes. These systems are already very popular in many countries of northern Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, etc.) despite the fact that these countries do not have the sunshine of Greece.
OPERATION OF SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS
Solar Thermal Systems (STS) for residential heating- Combi systems – are exploiting the sunlight to heat water which circulates in solar collectors that are placed on the roof of the house. The hot water from the collectors transfers its heat to the water hot tub (boiler-buffer) which is usually placed in the boiler room of the house. Then the water circulates to the radiators or to the underfloor heating pipes and warms up the residence.
Due to non- continuous sunshine, it is necessary to install central heating with typical equipment burning oil, or natural gas or biomass (pellets).
The STS achieves maximum performance at temperature of T = 40-50 ° C and therefore works best in conjunction with fan-coils, or the underfloor heating. It is of course possible to operate with the ordinary radiators.
Based on solar radiation data for Greece, by using high absorption solar panels (blue titanium), in a surface area of about 15-20% of the area of the heated space, we can achieve savings of around 30-40% of the needs for heating and hot water.
The STS can be installed in existing homes combined with the existing central heating system.
