Clarus Energy Services Company - DOUBLE GLAZING DOORS AND INSULATING FRAMES
Energy Interventions > DOUBLE GLAZING DOORS AND INSULATING FRAMES

The replacement of the old style single glazed windows and doors with modern double glazed ones is a key intervention for the energy upgrade of a building.

Double glazed windows are divided into “conventional “and “Low E” ones. Conventional ones consist of two panes separated by a layer of air or other gas. “Low E” ones are similar to the conventional, but one of the panes has a special coating reflecting the infrared part of the radiation.

Both types have lower heat transfer rate than single glazed windows. At temperature differences of 20 degrees Celsius between the two sides of the door/window, the conventional double glazed allows half the heat loss than a single pane, while the “Low E” allow only one-sixth of the heat loss compared to a single glazed window.

ADVANTAGES

The main advantage of energy-efficient doors / windows is the energy savings from heating during the winter and cooling during the summer.

A study by the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) calculated that in a typical apartment of 100m ², the replacement of the old single glazed windows with double glazed, saved annually the following amounts of heating oil depending the area of the building:

  • In Athens, more than 600 liters
  • In Thessaloniki more than 1000 liters
  • In Florina more than 1450 liters
  • In Chania over 440 liters

In addition to saving energy, double glazed doors/windows offer good noise insulation, protect the environment and upgrade the value of your building.
